Kids Shoe Size Guide: How to Measure Children's Feet (Age Chart)

Published 2026-03-31 · Data from 149 brand charts

Why Kids' Shoe Sizing Matters More

Children's feet grow 1-2 sizes per year until age 6, then about 1 size per year until 12. Shoes that are too small can cause lasting foot problems. Too large means tripping and blisters.

How to Measure Kids' Feet

  1. Stand them up — never measure while sitting or lying down.
  2. Foot on paper — trace around the foot with a pen held straight.
  3. Measure from heel to longest toe — in centimeters.
  4. Add 10-15mm — growing room. Children need more space than adults.
  5. Check every 2-3 months — especially ages 2-6 when growth is fastest.

The Thumb Test

With the child standing in the shoe, press your thumb on the front. There should be about one thumb's width (12-15mm) between the longest toe and the shoe tip. Less than that = too small. More than that = too big.
